It is a major transportation hub, with dozens of railways, roads and motorways passing through the city. It is also the focal point of many international flights to China. Beijing is recognised as the political, educational, and cultural center of the People's Republic of China, while Shanghai and Hong Kong predominate in economic fields. The city will host the 2008 Summer Olympics.



Shanghai is one of China's direct-controlled municipalities, called "hu" or "shen" for short, and sometimes referred to by nicknames such as “Modu”, meaning "magical city", or "little Paris of the East".  Shanghai's total area is 6,340 square kilomoters, and a population of over 2,500 people resides in Shanghai. The climate of Shanghai is sunny, with ample rainfall, and four distinct seasons. In China,  Shanghai is a shipping, trade, economic, and exhibition center. The local dialect in Shanghai is Shanghaihua. The longtang, shikumen, the qipao are all symbols of Shanghai.



Xi'an, formerly known as "Chang'an" and "Haojing", the capital of Shaanxi province and one of China's "four great capitals", is sutuated at the center of the Guanzhong Plain. The city has a history of over 7,000 years, and it was the capital of China for over 1,100 years, during thirteen different dynasties, including the Zhou, Qin, Han, Sui and Tang dynasties. It was the starting point of the silk road, and is regarded as one of the places of origin of the Chinese civilization and Chinese nationality.



The city of Hangzhou, sometimes abbreviated as "Hang", is situated along the southeastern coast of China. As the capital of Zhejiang province, it is the political, economic, cultural, and financial center of Zhejiang province, and the center of e-commerce in China. The headquarters of the famous Alibaba Group is based in Hangzhou. Furthermore, Wuyue culture originated in Hangzhou, and thus, Hangzhou has a rich history and culture. The beautiful scenery in Hangzhou has been praised as the "heaven in the human realm". Some of the distinctive, representative cultures of Hangzhou include Liangzhu culture, silk culture, and tea culture.



Kunming is the capital of Yunnan province. It is located in the southwestern part of China, along the southern edge of the Dianchi Lake, and surrounded by mountains on three sides. Kunming has a warm climate, with all four seasons resembling spring, and the smallest temperature variation throughout the year of any place in China. It has been nicknamed "Spring City". Since flowers bloom and the vegetation is lush all year, it has also been nicknamed "flower city".  From the "Southern Silk Road" of two centuries ago, to the reform period, Kunming has been a transportation hub and center of economic trade for the East Asian mainland and the Southeast Asian peninsula.



Luoyang is in the western part of Henan province, in the middle reaches of the Yellow River. It has been a major city for over 1,500 years. Among China's "six great capitals", Luoyang was the first to be a capital, has the longest history, and has served as the capital through the most dynasties. The Chinese name for "China", Zhongguo, which literally means "middle kingdom", is related to Luoyang. Luoyang is situated deep in the midlands of the continent, and in ancient times, people called it the "middle of the earthly realm".  Many consider Luoyang to be the place of origin of the Chinese civilization and of Huaxia culture. Legendary figures such as the goddess Nüwa, the Yellow Emperor, Emperor Yao, Emperor Shun, and Yu the Great all inhabited Luoyang.



Tulou are residential buildings constructed primarily from mud and wood, and sometimes varying amounts of stone. They can be found in areas inhabited by the Hakka people, in the southeastern provinces of Fujian, Jiangxi, and Guangdong. Tulou are a unique architectural structure, and considered to be a treasure of Chinese culture. Tulou are designed to provide protection from theft and wild beasts. They also embody the Confucian ideal of a large clan living communally. Fujian province, currently the home of over 3000 tulou, has the greatest number of, and most diverse variety of tulou. The tulou of Fujian province are also distributed over the vastest area of land, and the best preserved.



Guangzhou is the capital of Guangdong province, in southern China. It is a the political, military, economic, cultural, and educational center of southern China. Guangzhou is right across a narrow strip of sea from Hong Kong and Macau. The port city was one of the main starting points of the Silk Road, nicknamed China's "big south gate". Guangzhou is situated alongside the sea, in the tropical zone. It has a warm climate and receives abundant sumlight and rainfall, with a long summer and a very short cold season. The annual average temperature is 21.9̊° Celsius (71.4° Fahrenheit), and is one of China's cities with the smallest temperature variation. Guangzhou is also the hometown to a very large number of Chinese who have emigrated to other countries. It is the city with the highest number of residents with relatives living overseas.



Nanjing, sometimes called "Ning" for short, is the capital of Jiangsu province. It is situated in central China, around the lower reaches of the Yangtze river. The history of Nanjing goes back over 7,000 years. It was China's capital for nearly 500 years, and is one of China's so-called "Four Great Ancient Capitals".  Nanjing was the capital throughout a period lasting six dynasties: the Eastern Wu; the Eastern Jin; and the "four southern dynasties", the Song, Qi, Liang and Chen dynasties. During this period, the city was called "Jiankang". It was the world's largest city at the time, with a population of around one million. It is also the world's first city with a symmetrical layout, significantly impacting many cities in East Asia. For an extended period of time, Nanjing was the political, economic and cultural center of southern China, with a profound history and rich cultural legacy.
